6 Tried & Tested Ways To Improve Nail Health

Throughout January, our team of Nail Care Experts are focusing on improving your overall nail health. As much as we all love a good Gel Manicure, it’s important to remember to take occasional breaks from time to time.

Some nail polishes contain chemicals that can damage nails over a prolonged period, making them weak, brittle and/or discoloured. A nail detox could really benefit those who have frequent, back-to-back manicures. Or those who haven’t had a break from gel in a while.

At Nails & Brows Mayfair, we offer the very best in natural nail care. Here are our 6 Tried & Tested Ways To Improve Nail Health:

1. Remove polish the RIGHT way (Absolutely no picking or peeling)

It’s very tempting to pick and peel off your Shellac polish, but it can REALLY damage your natural nails. Because Shellac adheres to the natural nail so well, when you peel it away it can also peel away the top layer(s) of your nails. Causing them to become thin and painful. We always recommend a professional removal of polish, to avoid damaging your natural nail. At Nails & Brows Mayfair, we offer our course clients complimentary Shellac Removal, to encourage them to have it done the right way.

2. Invest in a good cuticle oil

A good cuticle oil can work wonders on dry, dehydrated cuticles. Not only can this improve the look of your nails and skin, it can actually help your manicure to last longer. At Nails & Brows Mayfair, our nail care experts recommend a nightly application of Dadi Oil (95% organic) to nails and surrounding area. Dadi Oil is made up of more than 20 naturally derived ingredients and essential oils. It absorbs quickly and penetrates deep into the skin and nails. This improves the overall health of the nail and cuticle.

3. Improve your vitamin and mineral intake

A lot of common nail conditions are actually caused by vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Dry and brittle nails, ridges, beau’s lines (depressions across the nail), Koilonychia (or spoon nails), Leukonychia (white streaks or spots on the nails), pitting. If you are concerned about not getting the right nutrients from your diet, you should consult your doctor.

4. Visit the professionals

Fingernails are comprised of laminated layers of protein called keratin, and can become brittle and worn down from work. Manicures are designed to help clean and moisturise your nails on a deep level, and give much needed attention to your cuticles.

The crescent at the base of your nail is called the lunula, and the cuticle is the piece of skin that overlaps the base. Cuticle care is important to keep skin from becoming ragged and tearing, which could lead to a bacterial infection. (When cuticles are red or inflamed there’s a good chance there’s bacteria brewing). Manicures groom the skin all around your nails, leaving them strong and beautiful. They also clear away unwanted extra skin that can lead to infections or fungus.

At Nails & Brows Mayfair, our team of highly skilled Manicurists share their knowledge and expertise with clients. This ensures they are getting a five star experience every time they visit.

5. Add an IBX to your regular manicure

At Nails & Brows Mayfair, we recommend an IBX strengthening treatment prior to a CND Shellac Manicure, to give your nails as much protection as possible.

Haven’t heard of IBX before? The IBX Nail Strengthening System is a revolutionary nail treatment for targeting peeling or damaged nails and enhance growth. It is the first treatment if its kind, IBX works INSIDE the nail not on top. It can either be used as an ‘add-on’ under polish for a protective shield or for precise damage repair, such as splits and peeling.

6. Handbag essentials

With hectic lives, it’s very easy to forget to use your cuticle oil or hand cream everyday. So we find it works best if you keep all of your essentials  in your handbag so that you can easily access them at a time that is convenient. Travelling on public transport for example,  apply hand cream whilst you’re journeying to work. Or perhaps you’re in an Uber en route to a meeting, a quick dab of cuticle oil will freshen up any manicure. The last handy essential we recommend is a nail file for any nail emergencies that may arise! We recommend a nail file with grit of 180. Anything coarser could damage the natural nail.
